Mayor Tuckerman Recognised with Ministers’ Award

Boorowa Council Mayor Wendy Tuckerman was recognised for her outstanding contribution to Local Government at the recent NSW Government’s Ministers’ Awards for Women in Local Government. At the awards ceremony Mayor Tuckerman received her award in the category elected representative from a rural and regional Council.

The awards are judged by a panel consisting of representatives from Local Government NSW, Local Government Professionals Australia NSW, Australian Local Government Women’s Association, Country Women’s Association, Minister Toole’s Office, Minister Goward’s Office, Women NSW and Office of Local Government.

Although humbled by the award, Mayor Tuckerman remains focused on delivering for her constituents.

“The recognition is nice but for me personally my role in Local Government has always been about making my community and the region the best possible place to live, work and play” said Mayor Tuckerman.

Having moved to Boorowa with her family nearly twenty years ago, Mayor Tuckerman found Local Government the ideal way to be involved in the community and utilise the skills she had developed during her career in the Australian Federal Police.

“I have always been community minded both in my professional and personal life and I think being in Local Government has really allowed me to combine many of the things I enjoy” she said.

Although Local Government can be very rewarding it also provides its fair share of challenges and according to Mayor Tuckerman the past 12 months have been the most challenging of her time in Local Government.

“The change process that has been occurring across the Local Government sector has become quite protracted and every time we have seen an end point in site the goal posts have shifted. We again have recently been advised of another proposal and we expect to be working with the community on what we believe to be the next steps in the process over the coming weeks” said Mayor Tuckerman.

Councils Deputy Mayor Christopher Corcoran reinforced the recognition Mayor Tuckerman received through the award. “Wendy is an exceptional leader that has continued to do a fantastic job representing the interests of her community for over a decade. I think her personal role in the growth that is occurring in Boorowa should not be underestimated and the recognition Boorowa is receiving in the broader Canberra Region is testament to the passion and commitment she continually displays” he said.
